This course is designed to increase the perception for insurance personnel toward identification of potential arson and fraud incidents. The alertness of individuals who first contact the claimant is critical to identifying indicators of arson, fraud and deception. A criminal’s actions in the first 48 hours after the event are the least rehearsed and prepared. Modern criminals typically employ simple methods to set fires leaving minimal physical evidence. The era of television shows highlighting forensic science has caused a down turn in the use of ignitable liquids. The difference between an accident and arson is simply intent. Candles, trash, appliances, cigarettes and other normal household items are being used to conceal the “intent” behind ignition.
AEPS will educate participants in simple fire science allowing them to recognize areas of concern during the first meeting and site inspection. Additionally we prepare participants to understand the role of the human factor and the criminal element as they pertain to fire claims. The program prepares participants to inquire and document critical components necessary to create a timeline and track the claimants actions prior to, during and after the fire. Students will learn the investigative value of establishing a solid foundation based on facts. Participants will be better able to make informed decisions regarding investigative actions necessary to protect their company. The actions or inactions of insurance personnel can affect the overall outcome of the claim and investigation. The early data obtained will be referenced and utilized later by fire investigators, legal counsel, corporate management and law enforcement to make judicious decisions regarding the validity of the claim. Arson is the most difficult crime to prove. Proper awareness is the initial step in fighting arson for profit scams.
The program is delivered in a classroom setting with the use of visual aids to include, video and audio files from actual arson and fraud investigations. The course is intended for Insurance Company Adjusters, Agents, Inspectors, Call Takers, Fire Investigators and other personnel who may interact with a claimant within the early stages of processing.
